Parker Pillsbury

Born in Massachusetts, Parker Pillsbury moved to Henniker and called New Hampshire home the rest of his life. He farmed but also became a Congregational minister and served at a Loudon church. By 1840, Pillsbury was stirring up trouble in the church, promoting his antislavery beliefs. His preaching license was actually revoked because of his criticisms of the church’s slavery stance.

He joined an ecumenical Free Religious Association, so he continued preaching throughout New York, Ohio and Michigan. But his calling was to the abolitionist movement, and he returned to New England to work for the cause. He was a lecturing agent for the antislavery societies of New Hampshire and Massachusetts, helping to organize events and conventions.

Pillsbury traveled with Foster, Rogers, Garrison, Douglass and others. Besides recording the mission of the abolitionists, he was known as an “agitator” and fierce lecturer himself.

Pillsbury published his abolition memoirs, Acts of the Anti-Slavery Apostles , in 1883.

Wilbur Siebert referred to Pillsbury as the

gifted son of New Hampshire…a very powerful speaker. He had a vivid imagination and could picture the atrocities of the slave system and the guilt of its supporters in their true light. His speeches, adorned with imagery, were very fascinating; his manner, solemn and earnest, was most impressive. To intensify his utterances he exhibited shackles, chains and a terrible whip whose throngs were red with blood drawn from the backs of slaves.
